Cassandra Ann Myers – My NASCAR Experience at Richmond International Raceway

My NASCAR Experience at

Richmond International Raceway

By: Cassandra Ann Myers

On September 10th 2016 I attended my first NASCAR race ever and this blog will explain all about the experience I had at Richmond International Raceway. It was one of the best days of my life LOL – Seriously, it was one of the coolest things I have ever done.

I had been given two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series hot passes for this race which gave me access to pits & garage area and I had no idea what to expect. I was so nervous knowing I was going to be around the some of the coolest people in NASCAR, including drivers, crew members, reporters etc. in the top series of the sport.

Saturday Morning, Sept 10th, 2016

Saturday morning we woke up at 6:00am & as soon as I opened my eyes I felt nauseous and I didn’t feel good at all.  I hoped that once I got up and started moving, it would go away but that wasn’t happening. This feeling was not going away and at that point I realized it was my nerves getting the best of me. I could barely move without feeling like I wanted to vomit. I slowly sipped on a bottle of water and put a piece of mint gum in my mouth to try and ease the nausea feelings. It helped just enough so I could get ready and head toward the track. Before we arrived, we stopped at a Starbucks for some coffee and I couldn’t even drink it. I think I took one sip and threw it away because of how nervous I was. Once we got to the track and parked I finally felt my nausea going away.

Just pulling up to the track was exciting! It was so hard to believe that I was finally there!  I was one of the happiest girls on earth at that moment but I had no idea what was in store for the rest of the day. It was a bit of an adventure just trying to find the NASCAR Sprint Cup Credentials Hauler where we had to go to pick up our hot passes. We asked the wonderful Guest Services person at RIR for help and he took us straight to the credential hauler. We had to fill out and sign the NASCAR release form before going in the hauler to get our credentials. After we filled out the form, we realized we had arrived a lil too early and couldn’t get our passes until 12:30pm. Thankfully, they up opened the hauler a little early because there were a lot of people waiting on line. While standing in that line, the realization started to kick in that this was really about to happen and I was so excited!

Saturday Afternoon September 10th , 2016

After we picked up our hot passes, we wandered around the midway at RIR and checked out the huge Fanatics Tent. Then we stopped to get some lunch while waiting for the garage to open. Shortly after lunch, we met up with on of my online NASCAR friends, and headed down to ‘Grid Side Live’ where different drivers made an appearance in front of a crowd of fans on the actual track. I have to say, it was pretty awesome to be standing on the race track. After that, we headed towards the garage and the track crews were handing out NASCAR Sprint Cup towels which was great because it came in very handy as it was a super hot day.

My friend who had this kind of access before gave me and my friend a cool tour of pit road and then we walked into the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage. After walking around and checking it all out, we went to the No.32, Go Fas Racing team hauler for driver, Jeffrey Earnhardt. That’s when we met Mason St. Hilaire, General Manager of GoFas Racing. While standing around outside of the hauler just looking around and taking it all in, Jeffrey Earnhardt came out behind me and waited for me to turn around to see him. I was like, “Holy Crap I am so nervous” and he asked “Why are you so nervous?” LOL In my head, my answer was “because you’re Jeffrey Earnhardt and I’m so nervous about meeting someone I admire so much!”  In case you didn’t know, I am a big fan of Jeffrey and I will always support him every week no matter what team he’s with or how he does in each race. Plus he kinda gets to me because he is pretty darn good-looking too and that is such a big bonus!

I’m glad that I could be there to watch him succeed and grow. It’s good to see a driver who has so much passion for the sport and I can’t wait for the day when he takes home a top 10 finish or better yet, a WIN! That will be a day I won’t ever forget. As if meeting Mason and Jeffrey weren’t enough, I also had the pleasure of meeting the team’s sponsors Teresa and Tom Keen. If it weren’t for them, I would have never had this experience and words can’t describe how thankful I am for they opportunity they gave me. They own a Company called Keen Parts. Check out their site! They are great people and I consider myself lucky to know them as friends.

Other than meeting the person I admire the most, Jeffrey Earnhardt, there were other amazing things that happened. I gave him a lot of Good Luck hugs LOL (not kidding, I did) & I had the honor of standing with his crew on pit road by his car before the race began. It was totally unexpected! I thought we were going to have to go behind pit wall for pre-race ceremonies but that wasn’t the case. All of a sudden I heard them say “lineup” and I was shocked, but I did what they said and got in line. Then I heard the most wonderful words from one of the crew members who shouted “You can stand by Jeffrey” so I did and OMG my heart was pounding! It was so exciting standing next to Jeffrey and his crew during the pre-race ceremonies. What an awesome experience of a lifetime!

Saturday Evening September 10th, 2016

Once the pre-race ceremonies were over, we headed to the back of their pit area because that’s where we planned on staying to watch the race. We got another awesome surprise when they told us that we could sit on top of their pit box instead! WOW, this was a truly great experience. They gave us scanners so we could listen to Wally Rogers, (crew chief) talk to Jeffrey during the race. The first round of pit stops was really exciting. We had the best view ever! (coming from a person who has only seen a pit stop on TV before this) After one of their pit stops, I felt someone tap me on the shoulder… it was one of the crew members and he handed me a few lug nuts that just came off of Jeffrey’s car!

There is one last thing I want to share. When the race was over, we headed back to Jeffrey’s hauler to congratulate him on getting his career best finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He came home in P27 and he led the first two laps under the first caution. I knew I had to congratulate him before I left and snag another hug. I told him I knew I was his good luck charm and it looked like all those good luck hugs paid off. LOL
I would like to thank everyone who made this possible. It was a dream come true and I’m so fortunate to know such great people. I can’t thank them enough for giving me this opportunity. Hopefully I can come hangout with them again. I also want to say Thank You for not only being my friends but for being part of my NASCAR & racing family!!!
